The Tutor

I am an artist that has over 20 years of art experience in digital art. I am a licensed teacher and graduated with a B.F.A. in both Art Education as well as Digital Media specializing in animation and video editing.
I am currently a  Wyzant Digital Art Tutor with over 1,000 hours of tutoring experience. I have also been teaching since 2014 in various art programs including Summer Enrichment programs, Library Workshops, and after school art clubs. I am also a game developer on the team "Mystic Mask Media LLC" and a streamer on "Glint Gamers" and contribute edited videos, animations, and illustrations on various projects.

My main focus as an artist is with drawing organic beings from nature and fantasy. My expertise lie in drawing mythical creatures as well as humans, plants, and animals. I can teach character design with a range of cartoon styles to more semi realistic styles. This includes Anime, Manga, comics, western cartoons, and whimsical styles.

I have more recently been mastering 3D modeling, and can teach 3D in Blender focusing on background design. Backgrounds I feel are a very important element when it comes to either drawing or modeling a scene, and thus I have created many models to aid in video game, webtoon, and illustration practice.

In the near future, I intend to also create video courses on Udemy, and will keep the site up to date when the courses become available. The first courses will focus on beginner level digital art in Krita!

If you are going to be taking a drawing and especially an animation lesson, I highly recommend investing in a tablet of some sort.

While it's not required, it will make drawing a lot more natural and you won't have shaky lines. As an alternative, you can scan your artwork and color digitally if interested in learning digital art.

For Tablets, I recommend Wacom, Huion, and XP Pen tablets. They have both screen and screenless options. The screenless options are far less expensive but have a higher learning curve, while screen tablets are far more intuitive and feel closer to a traditional drawing experience.

If you need something a bit more mobile, You can also go with Ipads and Surface Tablets.

Do Note though that Ipads cannot inherently use programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator without the aid of purchasing additional software for screen mirroring(Such as Astropad). The Ipad can however natively use programs such as Procreate and Clip Studio Paint.  Surface Tablets on the other hand can handle programs like Photoshop and any other creative program that's compatible with Windows. They are effectively very skinny laptops with a touch screen.

Do I need a tablet to begin? If so, what brand do you recommend?

While I don't need to be a coding mastermind, I do need to you to know basic computer skills such as general folder navigation, basic shortcuts, and mouse functions.(such as knowing the difference between a left and a right click)

I also expect the computer or device being used capable of handling the software the student wants to learn. Generally, make sure the computer isn't any older than 5 years old, otherwise the computer may lock up and bottleneck the software.

Do I need to be a computer wiz to take your lessons?

I am by no means an IT person, so I cannot guarantee I can solve more technical problems wit the art software. I can however do the best of my ability to solve any issues, but it's preferred if a student has all software problems resolved before a lesson starts.

Help! I have an issue with my software! Can you help fix it?

I would prefer if you sign up to Wyzant, as this guarantees you get the lesson and payment is handled through their hub.

By going through Wyzant, it also helps my overall ratings and searchability and you do not need to pay upfront until the lesson is complete.

Do I need a Wyzant account to have a lesson?

We can have a free 20 minute discussion before starting lessons to go through programs that meet your needs.

You may contact me via email, phone call, or Wyzant messenger.

Some great open source/ Free programs are:

  • Drawing: Krita, Gimp

  • 3D Modeing & Animation: Blender

  • Vector Art: Inkscape

  • Video Editing: Da Vinci Resolve

  • Streaming: Streamlabs OBS

Help! I'm a beginner. How do I know which software is best for my needs?

Both of us would connect on Zoom and when connecting to Wyzant, you sign up with your payment information and the lesson gets logged after completion. When a lesson is a complete, that's then when you would get charged.

  • For the lesson itself, I generally use Zoom's Screenshare abilities to both showcase what's on  my screen and students may do the same. I usually annotate on the Student's screen while they work on their project.

I've never done online lessons. How does this work?

Procreate $12 (great for drawing and animation)

Clip Studio Paint $0.99/ Month (has a 6 moth free trial for the ipad)

Medibang Free Drawing App

Autodesk Sketchbook  Drawing App with a free plan.

I want to use an ipad for drawing. What programs do you recommend?

I recommend the app "Let's View". This is a free program that is compatible with Mac and Windows and allows for both a student and myself to very clearly see each other's screens when sharing on Zoom. You need to install the ipad version as well as the desktop version for the program to work.

I use an ipad /android tablet but how do I connect to the computer for screen sharing?

I teach all ages from 5 though adulthood. I have experience working in K-12 schools and have taught afterschool programs, teen-adult workshops, and summer art  enrichment programs.

What age group do you teach?

For 3D Modeling, Make sure your computer isn't too old. I don't recommend a computer older than 5 years old as it will lock up when doing more demanding tasks in the program.

I also recommend investing in a physical mouse(one with a middle button) as navigating will be a lot easier than with a touchpad on a laptop.

Currently, I teach Blender, and here's a link to the minimum specs a computer needs to run Blender efficiently.

Blender Recommended Specs Page.

I want to learn 3D modeling. What tools do you recommend?

Yes, it is possible to do art on a chromebook, however There are a few things to look out for.

First, the chromebook  runs Chrome OS not to be mistaken for Windows or MAC OS. Chrome OS is a linux based OS that can run apps through google play much like an android phone or tablet. It can run any art software that can be downloaded from the google play store such as Clip Studio Paint and Autodesk Sketchbook.

Do note though it cannot run software such as Photoshop, Blender, or any Substance program as those are Windows/MAC OS software and cannot be downloaded on a chromebook.

Can I do art on a Chromebook?
